Griffon Vulture Monitoring on Plavnik Island
Employing solar-powered remote video monitoring to assess tourism impact on Plavnik Island vulture colonies
Karsterra d.o.o., in collaboration with the Public Institution “Priroda”, developed and implemented an off-grid video surveillance system on Plavnik Island to support Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) conservation.
This system includes two autonomous camera units: one focused on a vulture nest to monitor breeding behavior without disturbance, and another directed at the coastal waters below the cliffs to observe tourist and boat traffic. Together, these perspectives allow researchers to assess potential disturbances from human activities and their impact on the nesting success of this vulnerable species.
The fully autonomous, solar-powered system operates in a challenging karst environment and provides remote access for continuous monitoring. This innovative approach enhances conservation efforts by providing critical data to guide management and protection strategies for one of Croatia’s most iconic bird species.
