Hunting for Caves with LiDAR - Medvednica case study
High-resolution LiDAR analysis and cadastre of potential speleological features in Medvednica nature park
Karsterra d.o.o., commissioned by the City of Zagreb, developed a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and a cadastre of potential speleological features within Medvednica Nature Park. By processing publicly available LiDAR data, we created a detailed terrain model to detect possible new cave entrances and to update records of known speleological sites.
The project supports sustainable management and conservation of Medvednica’s karst landscape by providing valuable insights into the subterranean environment. Advanced geospatial analysis techniques, including geomorphometric analysis and terrain anomaly detection, were applied to identify surface indicators of underground voids.
This dataset serves as a key resource for speleologists, researchers, and park managers, enabling more effective exploration, monitoring, and protection of Medvednica’s speleological heritage.
