Managing Karst Risks in the Istrian Y Motorway Expansion

Rapid-response (bio)speleological support on the Istrian Y project enabling uninterrupted construction in karst terrain

As part of the upgrade and expansion to full motorway profile of sections A8 and A9 of the Istrian Y, we are providing speleological and biospeleological supervision and investigations for the client Bina-Istra d.d.

The work is carried out in a highly karstified terrain, where there is a realistic possibility of encountering cavities and speleological features during excavation works and construction of infrastructure elements (Učka tunnel, Učka tunnel – Kvarner portal – Matulji section, Limska Draga and Mirna viaducts). Such occurrences can significantly affect construction dynamics and require a timely response in accordance with environmental protection regulations.

The project includes:

  • speleological field inspections within planned construction zones

  • biospeleological supervision during excavation works

  • rapid response investigations in case of newly discovered underground features

  • documentation and preparation of technical reports (sketches, photo documentation, basic morphometric data)

  • expert support for reporting findings to competent authorities

A key aspect of the project is rapid response capability – the field team is mobilised within 48 hours of notification, minimising construction delays while ensuring compliance with environmental requirements.

The project is implemented within the framework of environmental protection measures and construction monitoring plans, applying established standards of biospeleological supervision and best practices for work in karst environments.
