The underground karst environment is one of the most valuable, yet least accessible, components of the natural heritage of Krka National Park. Caves provide important habitats for highly specialised subterranean organisms, preserve evidence of the area's geological history, and play a key role in understanding the hydrological processes characteristic of karst landscapes.

To improve knowledge of the Park's underground heritage, Karsterra Ltd. prepared an Inventory of Potential Speleological Features covering the wider Krka National Park area. The project encompassed the Natura 2000 site Wider Krka National Park Area, covering 131.57 km², with the aim of identifying and mapping locations where previously unknown caves and pits may exist through the analysis of available LiDAR data.

The study resulted in the identification of 300 potential speleological features, providing a valuable basis for future field surveys, the expansion of existing databases, and more effective planning of conservation and management activities related to subterranean habitats.

The project's significance lies in the fact that much of the karst underground remains insufficiently explored. Although numerous valuable speleological sites have already been documented within Krka National Park, the complexity of the karst terrain, difficult accessibility, and often concealed cave entrances make the discovery of new features particularly challenging. The new inventory helps focus future surveys on areas with the highest potential, enabling more efficient use of field resources.

The analysis also identified locations corresponding to previously known speleological features, further validating the methodology and providing opportunities to improve existing records. More than a catalogue of potential sites, the new inventory represents an important tool for the systematic exploration, monitoring, and conservation of the unique underground heritage of Krka National Park.
